What to Bring to the Hospital for a Scheduled C-Section

For one reason or another, you already know that your baby’s coming to this world by means of caesarean. You even know the date (weird, isn’t it?) You don’t have that packed hospital bag waiting at the front door during those last weeks of pregnancy, but will eventually need one – just a little bit different. Here’s what made my 5-day stay at the hospital as comfortable as possible.

For one reason or another, you already know that your baby’s coming to this world by means of caesarean.  You even know the date (weird, isn’t it?)  You don’t have that packed hospital bag waiting at the front door during those last weeks of pregnancy, but will eventually need one – just a little bit different.

Many women underestimate the pain and discomfort involved with a cesarean and there isn’t much information out there to tell you what to bring and what to expect.  What surprised and frustrated me the most was how debilitated I was after the operation.  I had no idea that it was going to be so painful that I couldn’t walk for 3 days.  I couldn’t carry my babies up and down the stairs once we got home and Thomas had to take care of all three of us for 2 weeks until I could manage on my own.

Here’s what made my 5-day stay at the hospital as comfortable as possible.

Insurance / Identification / Medical Files

Be sure to have everything in one folder for a quick and easy check-in at the hospital.  Your baby brain has already kicked in at full force so the last thing you need is to be stressing about getting all your documents together at the last minute.

Toiletries & Cosmetics

These include everything you need for your personal hygiene. Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, hair brush, hair ties, facial cleanser and basic makeup just to name a few.

If you’re lucky, you’ll feel well enough to shower.  Bring your showering products just in case: body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryer.

I wasn’t allowed to shower the first few days and was given sponge baths instead.  That sounds horrible, but I was in so much pain that I was thankful I didn’t have to stand under a shower.

Do yourself a favor and bring that makeup.  You will be so glad you forced yourself to put it on because you’ll never have this many photos taken of you in your whole life (unless you’re a supermodel.)  You may be bloated and hurting, but at least your face will be pretty.

Clothing for You

You need clothing that fulfill these criteria:

  1. waistbands are high enough so that they won’t put pressure on the incision
  2. the incision is easily accessible as it will be examined often
  3. easy breast access if you’re planning to breastfeed

Unless you’re a unicorn-mommy (you know the kind who never get stretch marks?), you’re still going to look 7 months pregnant after delivery.  I recommend wearing men’s flannel pajamas.  They’re loose, comfortable, and cute.  Cotton button-up-the-front nighties are great too, but eventually ride up when you’re lying in bed all day.  Cozy socks and maternity yoga-suits are also right on the money.

Don’t underestimate the convenience of the mesh underpants provided by the hospital.  Eventually, you’re gonna want your own underwear, so be sure to bring those too.  I personally loved these.

Bathrobe and slip-on slippers (ones where you don’t have to bend over to put on) or crocs are great for walking the halls.

My going-home outfit consisted of black maternity leggings, gray cotton turtleneck, black & white cashmere poncho, and black knee-high, flat-heeled leather boots.  That outfit was comfortable, looked good and the poncho covered up the Jabba-the-Hutt state my body was in – for even more photos!

Nursing Accessories

Nursing Accessories include nursing bra, nursing pads, nursing cover, breast pump with breast pump bra, and nursing pillow (here my favorite for twins) and/or boppy pillow
I didn’t bring my own pump because I thought I’d use the one at the hospital if I needed one.  I thought I’d be one of the lucky ones whose milk came in on the 2nd day. ha!  What I didn’t know beforehand, is that my hospital only had one pump for the entire maternity ward!

Postpartum Girdle

Recommended!

This was absolutely essential in helping me get back on my feet again. It held everything together and reduced back pain.

The one I bought had hooks in the crotch area so it could be worn like a panty.  The hooks were a bit difficult getting used to in the beginning, but I got the hang of it quickly.  The hooks in the front had two settings for tightening around the belly when the bloating and swelling finally subsided.  It is one of the more expensive ones, but worth every cent.

Once in a while I would try and go without it, just to see how my body was recuperating.  But my back was hurting so badly that I could only go half a day without it.  I wore it for two months after having the babies – and it made me look slimmer as well!

The less expensive ones are worn like a belt and tend to ride up after a while, putting pressure on the incision.  I used one during the third month for extra stability.

Electronics

Camera, phone, and power bank are all you need.  Don’t forget charging accessories, extra SD cards and headphones.

Although I was pretty busy recovering, pumping, nursing and sleeping, I was glad I had my phone and camera with me for communicating with friends and family and taking awesome photos. My portable power bank was also very useful for charging my phone while using it in bed.  I was too tired for laptops or tablets and I didn’t miss them one bit.

Snacks & Drinks

Pack a few luxurious snacks that will make you happy.  I thoroughly enjoyed my Godiva chocolate and granola bars.  I was on a coconut water binge at the time so I brought some of that with me too – delish!

Going Home Outfit

Chances are, your hospital will provide baby clothing for the duration of your stay.  Check just to make sure.

My advice in choosing baby’s going home outfit is “keep it simple!

I promised my mother-in-law that I would dress the babies in the going-home outfits she gave us.  These outfits couldn’t have been more complicated:  long sleeved onesies (body-wrap style with snaps and ties), grey polyester overalls with 10,000 snaps, and then we also had to put on her oversized self-knitted sweaters, hats and booties!  To top it all off we covered them with her self-crocheted blankets.  Though Thomas did most of the work, I was drenched in sweat and completely frazzled by the time we had the babies strapped into their car seats and we made the photos of evidence.

Silly things new parents do! You can’t even see the babies underneath all that crap!

A cute cotton zip-up pajama with matching cap and warm cotton blanket would have been perfect.

Did I forget anything?

If you’re like me, you’re going to be overly prepared for all possibilities and will pack way too much stuff.  I hope this list is a good guideline in helping you consider what’s really important and what’s not.  Let me know how it went in the comments below!  I’d love to hear from you!

Pregnancy Essentials

If you clicked through to this page, you’re probably suffering pregnancy discomfort something fierce.  Are you feeling a pure & utter exhaustion like you’ve never felt before?  You probably aren’t too keen on food or drink either, huh?

Or have you already stepped up to the “more advanced” wonders of pregnancy like swollen feet & ankles?  Can’t sleep because you’re worrying about EVERYTHING and wishing that damn carpal tunnel would just leave you alone?

Everyone is telling you how beautiful you look with your pregnancy “glow” – but you just ain’t feelin’ it?

But you’re in luck because there are some things you can do to make yourself feel better!  Here’s my list of what turned my overweight, hypothyroid, 40-year-old twin pregnancy into the best time of my life.  Though every pregnancy is different, I’m sure there’s something in there that will help you too!

Morning Sickness & Fatigue

These are the first big signs that something out of the ordinary is happening to your body.  It can be extremely debilitating.  You feel so run down that you need the entire weekend to recover from a normal work week.

If you’re like me, your morning sickness doesn’t just pertain to the mornings.  I felt queasy around the clock.  I was living on saltines and apple juice for weeks.  I felt so guilty starting my pregnancy on such an unhealthy diet, but it was all I could do to keep it down.

She probably doesn’t know this, but my sister-in-law gave me the best gift I’ve ever received in my entire life – a pregnancy care package!  We’re talkin’:

Those three items (temporarily) helped alleviate the symptoms so that I could eat real food while giving me the energy to prepare it.

A cup of pregnancy tea first thing in the morning enabled me to get ready and go to work every day without having to spend half an hour puking my guts out before I got in the car.
Pregnancy Essentials
I would eat some sour gummies around 11 am, which again alleviated nausea so that I could eat a sandwich or salad.
Pregnancy Essentials
I would do the same thing mid-afternoon with the ginger chews.  I couldn’t believe the effectiveness of ginger in alleviating nausea!  After having one of those candies, I was able to eat a healthy snack like veggies + dip, nuts, or salami & cheese.  All the while drinking at least 3 liters of water throughout the day – YAY!

Pregnancy Essentials
Alternatively, ginger tea (raw ginger + hot water) works well too – without the sugar!

Wash-rinse-repeat until the day comes where fatigue and nausea subside…and it will…I promise!

Making Juicy Babies & Feeling Better

The one item I wouldn’t go without is my prenatal supplement: Pure Essence Labs One ‘n’ Only Prenatal Multiple.  There are so many supplements out there, but what makes this one special is that it has a high concentration of phytonutrients and you only have to take one a day.
Pregnancy Essentials That Make You Feel as Good as You Look!
It provided my babies with all the nutrients they needed to grow strong and juicy while helping me with fatigue and nausea.  I can’t imagine the outcome if I hadn’t taken it.  I only had to choke down one pill a day as opposed to some supplements where you have to drink a concoction and take pills once or twice a day.

“I had such a good time brooding those babies, that Thomas said the sun was shining out of my a**!”

Feelin’ Fat & Ugly

Despite everyone telling you how radiantly beautiful you are, you probably aren’t feelin’ it.  You’re getting bigger by the day and pretty soon you’re going to have to start thinking about maternity clothes.

You’re telling yourself: “It’s a waste of money buying clothes I’ll only wear for 9 months!”  Maybe you have the energy and know-how to make some of the DIY maternity clothes you’ve seen on Pinterest?  I sure as hell didn’t.  And even if I did, I’m not sure I could’ve pulled it off so that it looked good enough for the office.

This is probably the only time in your life when you’re actually proud of your belly, so give in to your vanity and dress up that bump!

I spent way too much money at mamarella.com.  Everything I ordered fit perfectly and looked so put together – it was magic!  I was also a big customer at modli.co and newchic.com (don’t forget to use ebates!)  I even found some cool stuff at esprit.com, but most of it fell apart even before the babies were born.

Be sure to buy some pretty form-fitting dresses to really show off that bump.  Dresses are great because you go from slob to pretty lady within minutes.  Dresses are comfortable too – there’s nothing going on in the waist/crotch area.  All you need are some good maternity SPANX, a pair of flats, a touch of makeup, and you’re ready to go!

Don’t leave home without ’em!

I felt as if all eyes were on me – critical and well as well-wishing – so my new wardrobe really gave me a well-needed boost of confidence.  And due to my high-risk pregnancy (being over 35, twins, hypothyroid, and having gestational diabetes), I felt like I was constantly in a doctor’s office.  I noticed that I was taken more seriously and received better service when I was well-dressed.  In hindsight, I still don’t regret spending the money on myself.  Just slipping into something comfy and then instantly looking pretty made being pregnant a lot more fun.

Swollen Legs, Ankles & Feet

So let’s just say you’re only three months pregnant and the heat of the summer kicks in.  You know what happens?  Your lower extremities swell up like crazy.  Suddenly your pretty legs have turned into tree stumps.  You up a shoe size overnight.  Your skin itches and feels like it will crack open any minute because it’s so tight!

Thigh high compression stockings will be your new best friend.  You may need help putting them on the first few times (right when you get out of bed in the morning!) but they pretty much take care of the problem.  I bought these on Amazon.  They fit perfectly, did a great job with the compression and stayed up all day long without cutting into my thighs.
Pregnancy EssentialsEven if you normally don’t have problems, be sure to wear them when flying – a total game changer!

Stretchmarks

We all hope that we will be one of the magical mamas with anti-stretchmark genes (do these women really exist?)  But just to be on the safe side, slather that Mother Love Pregnant Belly Salve all over yourself as often as you can!  It has all natural and organic ingredients, smells pleasant to a pregnant lady and doesn’t have a greasy residue.
Pregnancy Essentials
I wasn’t one of the lucky ones (I was as big as a VW bug and they started showing up 3 months before due date), but I’m confident that the damage would have been much worse had I not used the salve almost every day.  I used at least 5 or 6 jars.  I also tried a self-made salve based on coconut oil and vitamin E oil which was amazing, but it didn’t absorb fast enough for my taste.

Sleep Deprivation

Oh yes…getting up to pee 5 to 6 times a night…needing what felt like hours to find the right position to get back to sleep again…lying awake wondering about how it will be with a baby to look after…what else do I need to do before the baby’s here????

If you’re a stomach-sleeper, my heart goes out to you.  That is not a good thing when you’re pregnant – I know.

So I was stupid and went for the less expensive version and only bought a long-side sleeper pillow, because my better half was concerned he might get kicked out of bed by one of those gigantic total body pillows.  Well, I’ll tell ya what…when in doubt, buy the total body pillow!  Just do it!  Those nights are long and uncomfortable and it’s good practice for the hubby to wake up a few times a night too.  This is about YOU.

Pregnancy Essentials

“YOU have the baby…YOU make the rules!”

This is also where lavender oil comes in.  You can’t just pop a melatonin and call it good when you’re pregnant.  Lavender oil (and magnesium oil spray) are your last resorts.  Although I never liked the smell of lavender, it certainly helped me fall asleep fast(er) and kept me calm(er) during the insomniac nights of worrying.  There’s nothing I could do about the numerous trips to the bathroom, but I couldn’t live without my lavender oil.  I still use it every night.
Pregnancy Essentials
If you are having problems with carpal tunnel, this is what you wear.  It won’t cure the problem but will help you cope.

Worrying

All kinds of crazy things spook around in your head at night.  The only thing you can do about it is get informed.

Stay Cool!

With the help of these pregnancy essentials, you’re totally gonna rock this pregnancy!  Just remember to STAY COOL!  If you’re relaxed, your baby’s relaxed – making for a much happier baby (and mommy!) once she arrives.

Did I leave out an important tip you’d like other mamas to know about?  I’d love it if you’d leave it in the comments below.  Thanks!
